- What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
- Italy
- Where would you most like to go next?
- We're considering several, including Prague-Budapest-Vienna . . . northern Tuscany . . . or a rental on the Amalfi coast
- Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
- We were near the hill town of Trevi, on a marvelous olive farm, "i Mandorli," owned and worked by the Zappeli family since the 1700's
- Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
- I've made pen & ink sketches, with watercolor overlays, of memorable places during all of our Untours thus far . . . some of these are shown on these pages
- What is the funniest thing that happened to you on an Untour?
- In a tiny alpine village of stone houses and shops high above Locarno, Switzerland (Ticino Untour), I came upon a street vendor of cheeses. Trying a couple samples, one in particular was just incredibly good. I just had to know the name of this cheese! Expecting a specific type or variety I asked the vendor In my rudimentary Italian, and he answered: "Swiss cheese." Oh. Guess I'll never know what it was, but I bought some, plus some crusty bread, for Sally and me to savor on the bus ride down the mountain . . .
- Which Untours have you already done?
- Ticino, in southern Switzerland (Locarno) . . . southern Tuscany (Torrenieri) . . . Austria (Kuchl) . . . and Umbria (near Spoleto)
- What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
- First, as the Nike ad says, "Just Do It." One way to look at it is, Adventure Travel With Training Wheels. You're as alone or as social as you wish to be, but there's always backup & problem solving by the terrific (I mean, REALLY terrific) Untours site managers.
Once you;ve chosen any Untour, As Doris M. recommends, read up on the country / region. And I definitely agree with her advice to learn at least a bit of the local language. Consider buying the very good "Pimsleur Method" cassette language-learning tapes, by Simon & Schuster --- we began learning Italian that way, and the fact that we were trying to speak their language delighted (most) of the Italians we encountered.

About my travel sketches . . .
The photo of Sally & me was taken by our (non-Untour) hosts, Signor e Signorina Della Pane, outside their home overlooking a quiet garden just a block or two from the Spanish Steps in Rome. Moments later they were serving a perfect breakfast in their perfect dining room. We hope to go back again to explore this truly magnificent city.
About my photos: Everywhere we have traveled, on Untours or on our own, I've spent happy hours observing, sketching (and then, for years afterward remembering) land, sea and townscapes. I first draw using Faber Castell pens (brick red and black), then add watercolor washes from a tiny Winsor Newton travel kit. I hope you enjoy my travel sketches.

I really like & enjoy your work. 1st look was poppies, & I mistook it for some "playing" in PS. All very nice!
You're right on. One of these years I'll learn how to use the program! Spending a lot of time in a wet darkroom makes it aa lot easier - also nice to see results NOW!
