Profile Information

What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
Paris
Where would you most like to go next?
We want to go to Spain and Tuscany.
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
Last year, 2006, we stayed at the Gamet apartment in Provence. The couple was wonderful and Cathy, in particular, was absolutely delightful. She didn't speak much English and we spoke no French and it was so fun to make ourselves understood. She just continued to laugh and giggle which was, of course, contagious.

Greece (Sept. 2007) was made even more special by the Untours-on- site-staff, Christos. His enthusiasm for his country and hometown of Nafplio is catching. He is very special and anyone going to Greece with Untours will be charmed by him.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
We are drawn to the historical sights in particular. My husband is especially found of good food and restaurants, so we seldom cook. We are both big on researching what we will be seeing. I am the photograper, mostly, and like to make albums complete with lengthy descriptions of what one is seeing. I figure no one will ever read them, but maybe when I'm old and no longer able to travel, they will refresh my memories.
What is the funniest thing that happened to you on an Untour?
We were at a restaurant in Provence, I don't remember what little town, and had already ordered a bottle of white wine. Later we tried to order some water, but it didn't have to be bottled water. Somehow in all the chatter back and forth, and even though we had several French dictionaries and a menu decoder, we ended up getting another bottle of wine, red this time. We didn't drink it all at that setting, but did take our leftover wine home for another time.
Which Untours have you already done?
Our first Untour,2005, was a sampler of one week in Rome and one in Venice. In 2006 we went to Provence and added on one week in Paris. In 2007 we enjoyed Greece. Two weeks with Untours on the Peloponnese with a couple overnight trips and then we added 4 nights in Athens and 3 nights on Santorini. In 2008 we visited Holland.
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Do some pre-planning. We have found Rick Steves books to be very helpful. Then let the Untour staff take over. Enjoy doing things at your own pace.
What is your favorite Untour? (so far)
Venice

I can't believe we just signed up for an Untours and will leave in two weeks!

This is so unlike us. We usually plan for months and months, but due to family obligations that wasn't possible this year. Now we are taking advantage of Untours "last minute deals" and heading off to Holland in two weeks. I'm frantically making lists. We have a couple of Holland guide books and are reading as fast as we can. I'm caught between being very excited and wondering if we have gone crazy. However, now that I think of it, if we're crazy maybe it's not a bad way to be. How bad can trave… Continue

You can't get to Paris this year?

If traveling to Paris this year is a problem for you, why not try our neighbors to the north? My husband and I found Quebec City and Montreal in Canada to be delightful Paris fill-ins. We didn't have a lot of time, but we did spend several days in each city this past June. Here's a quick account of what we found. Quebec City was lovely. We stayed in a hotel a bit away from the old city, but found the bus system to be quite good. And after we felt more comfortable we did drive to a couple of our… Continue

A French Bullfight

During our June 2006 visit to Provence, my husband, Dick, and I decided to check out a French bullfight in Mouries. Since we seem to be directionally challenged we had trouble at first finding the arena. However, since the town was so very small we decided to just park the car and walk around. After stopping for a beverage at the local bar we asked for directions and found we were just a few blocks away. Before the bullfight began a man came out and sprayed water on the sand. The Mistral winds… Continue

Thanks for the joining the Cafe. We would like to hear (or see) anything you want to share about -- it helps if it is remotely travel-related.

Let us know if we can help. And let us know a little bit about yourself and your Untour-ish interests, when you have a chance.

Don't hesitate to ask me (marilee)or powen or Kim (my colleagues and partners onthe Cafe project for help, if you need it.

Linda:
I just posted (pending approval) photos of the Etoile Park Hotel in Paris 1973 and 2008. I had Eleanor stand in the exact same spot she did in 1973. In my blog archives under "The Last Time I Saw Paris...Revisited" are more photos and comments about our visit with the lady inside at the front desk.

Linda, thanks for asking me to be your friend! I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about Spain. We like to focus on one area so we were only in Andalusia but any questions you have about Southern Spain - fire away and I'll see if I can help!

Linda,

I have been to Spain 3 different times - but have never been to the northern part... except Barcelona. If I could answer any other questions about other areas I will. I have friends from Madrid and also barcelona so if I can't help I can ask for their advice!

Hi Linda! I see that you recommend Rick Steves' books. We have also found many of his suggestions to be good ones, but would love more of your thoughts on books to read before and perhaps even during traveling. Come join our discussion on the new Book Forum!

There are Journals and guidebooks in your apartment with recent restaurant information. Lots of choices but rijstafel is a must. We used the Leiden museum for free internet (with museum card). Street market is great. Buy flowers there. We liked Kroller-Muller and Zuiderzeemuseum.
