Berit Greutert died this morning about 0430 local time in the Kanton Hospital in Sarnen. She came from Norway, and always loved her homeland as well as CH. She and Albert had been married 52 years and had lived in CH 40 of those years. They had three wonderful children, Jan Erik, Heidi, and Elisabeth. These three gave Berit a host of grandkids, and great grandkids. They in turn gave her love beyond the norm and were with her when The Circle of Life closed.

Berit was the heart and soul of The Heartland for many years, and she and Albert became symbols of Swiss hospitality. Countless American Idyllers were "Greutertized" by their graciousness, and many have remained loyal friends for years. I met her 28 years ago, was immediately captivated, and was fortunate enough to be made part of the family. Albert and Berit's friendship made my move here seem the natural thing to do, and I never felt "foreign" in this country because of them.

Berit is gone. I feel like a combo sister, girlfriend, and mother has left us. She was described by some as "a party on legs". She will never be more than a thought away from us.

Even with a bum foot, she could have fun! What a book this lady could have written. Maybe even more than one about Americans whom she genuinely loved to have visit.

I never knew this beautiful lady, but her smile is infectious! Her pictures depict a woman filled with kindness and joy. What a blessing she must have been to all who knew her. May God's peace be with her family and friends, during their time of grief.

My very first trip by myself after my husband died was to Studio Albert in Sachseln. Berit and Albert were the only landlords willing to take a chance on me and my service dog, "Gigi". Without them, I would never have gotten to experience and Untour. I loved Berit at once. She seemed like a sister to me and helped me get through some difficult times with her winning hospitality, advice and help (even picking me up from the train station when I got food poisoning) She was always at my door with a piece of cake or dessert, and her dinners were so much fun. I got to return again the following year and now feel it is a home away from home. I am typing this through my tears with the thought that I will not see her beautiful smiling face looking over the balcony as I struggle up the hill to the apt. I prayed for her recovery, but God knows best . He needed his angel up stairs. There is a great void in Switzerland.

We are at Chalet Berit. Oh how we miss Berit at the kitchen window. Those of you who have shared the pleasure of the generous Greutert hospitality are likely flooded with your own warm memories of dear Berit. Since Berit and I were the same age, she was a kindred spirit. On our visit last year she arrived on our patio on 4th of July singing America the Beautiful, carrying a tray, decorated in red, white and blue, filled with ice cream, cake and champagne. She always baked my BD cake on Flag Day. And what about her grape jam? It's the best. I remember an auto trip over the Grimsel Pass. She spotted the first Alpen roses of the season, and up the hill she scrambled. We treasure our time with Berit and Albert, and their family. The face in the window is missing, but not the memories.

What a shock to hear this, even though we knew she had been ill for a long time. We send our condolences to Albert and the entire family. We looked forward to her smiling face every year when we came to CH. God speed, Berit.

We met Berit and Albert several years ago when we stayed with them in Sachseln. They were some of the warmest, most delightful humans on this planet and we are honored to call them our friends.
The world is a bit less bright tonight but Heaven is a lot brighter. Berit was one of a kind and our lives were much enriched by having known her.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Albert and the family.

After my husband died, the best travel companion ever, my first trip alone was to Studio Albert in Sachseln. Berit and Albert were the only ones to take a chance on hosting me and my service dog,Gigi. Without them I never would known anything about Untours, and I returned the following year. I loved Berit at once. She was like a long lost sister and her warm hospitality and generosity are never to be forgotton. She would bring me a piece of cake or dessert and made sure that I was OK. She even rescued me from the railroad station when I had food poisoning and delivered me to the r.r. one day when I overslept.
I will never forget her beautiful smiling face as she leaned over the balcony and watched me struggle up the hill on my way back to the apt.
I prayed that the right meds would overcome the cancer and that the Swiss doctors would champion our Berit, but it seems that our happpy smiling angel was needed elsewhere She touched so many hearts that the Heartland will never be the same without her. Rest dear one..

My heart is filled with sadness with the passing of my dear friend Berit. But even as I say that something special comes to mind about her and I start smiling. The memories I have beginning with my first stay in Studio Albert in '93. Travelling alone but immediately I've found me a fantastic family! Greeting at the bahnoff and whisked off for a brief tour of the village before settling in to my cute little apartment with fresh flowers on the table and a loaf of homemade bread on the counter. Before too many hours pass I start meeting some of the wonderful members of their family. And how that family has grown. Everyone one of them making me feel welcome. Small wonder I've kept going back for all these years - last visit was Sep '08 and I'll never forget Berit bringing a gigantic bowl of huge shrimp (from Norway she said) and sits with us on Chalet Berit patio and says start peeling! That I'd never done - and I saw those shrimp eyes staring at me! Gross! I didn't know shrimp had eyes. But we all joined in and Berit was the life of the party as always.
I'll miss you so much - and now who will I leave my clothes to when I head home!!!!
