I don't think that the airlines will allow them in your carry on. I always put mine in my checked bag. Jo Thornton

Marion,
Switzerland is an excellent choice for hikers. My family has hiked all over the United States and Canada as well as Switzerland. We have found the hiking in Switzerland to be superb! As an "Untourist" you already are aware of the wonderful information you will receive prior to your departure. My advice is to study the hiking/biking guide. It was a valuable asset to our trip. Our favorite hike was from Grutshalp to Murren via the Mountainview Trail. There is also a hike from Grutshalp to Murren called the Grandfathers walk but we prefer the Mountainview even if it is more difficult. While it is not a dangerous hike, it is strenuous. We hiked it in mid June and the wild flowers were unbelievable. Wild azaleas were in bloom and hundreds of other flowering plants with the Jungfrau as the background. I have hiked all of my life and have never experienced a better walk. I will never forget watching my two children as they hiked through this beautiful region. If you take this hike it is important to carry at least some water because water opportunities are toward the end of the hike. Another area to consider would be above the Hasliberg villages. We took the lifts up from Reuti to Planplatten several days and took different trail each time. We liked this area because there were fewer hikers and the vistas were phenomenal. You will be able to access many great hikes, including the two I mentioned, from Lungern via the train. I hope this helps...Tom

Marion,
The beauty of hiking in Switzerland is the variety of trails. If you are wanting a relatively easy yet outstanding walk, I would recommend the Grandmothers Walk. This trail is described in some detail in the Hiking/Biking guide provided by Untours. The walk takes you from Mannelichen to Kleine Scheidegg. At the end of the hike there is a small train station with several food vendors and gift shops. While it is an easy walk it was one of the more scenic hikes we took while in Switzerland. Half of the fun is getting to Mannelichen via trains and aerial lifts. At your orientation meeting Jessica or Connie would be great resources for hiking suggestions. From Lungern it is very easy to navigate Switzerland by bus, boat, or train. In regard to food, we bought most of our groceries at the two main supermarkets; Migros and Coop. These are similar to US groceries while a little more expensive. We seemed to snack a lot on the local bread, cheese, and chocolate which probably explains why I lost no weight even though walking 6-10 hours per day. Our favorite restaurant is Manora which are located in many Manor department stores. These are cafeteria style with a great variety of very good food. Manor department stores are in many of the larger towns. We ate several times at the Manora in Luzern which has a great rooftop dining area. We also ate at the Manora in Thun. These were less pricey than many restaurants and it seemed like the locals would eat there as well.

Marion,
Dick and I will be leaving on August 11 for a sampler of Paris and Holland.
Do you have any advice as to where to go and what to see in Holland? We have been to Paris before, but never to the Netherlands. We love art, gardens and meeting new folks. Did you rent bicycles? Any tips you can give us would be greatly appreciated.
