Welcome! Untours--Our Favorite Way to Go!

Kay: Is this your first trip to the Heartland? And, are you staying in Meiringen? Don't want to offend anyone who is a resident of Interlaken, but can't imagine spending much time sightseeing there, except to change trains, and the required walk fro…

By all means pack those little items you can't live without. I actually do pack my four oatmeal servings for two, in small sealed plastic bags. That way I just add water--and away we go. But hopefully you will be close to a bakery (konditerei) to ta…

None! Switzerland is a grocery, snackers lover mecca. There will be everything your heart desires and more. Some of their schemes make me smile. In some of the larger Migro or Coop stores (e.g. Interlaken, Luzern, Bern) there are moving ramps that pe…

How long do you plan on being in Europe, i.e. How long is your Untour in the Oberland? If less than four (or five weeks), you would certainly dilute your experience in Switzerland. Especially true if this is your first trip to CH. Coming and going w…

I just watched the Richard Bang's video of Switzerland. It even lifts the spirits of us in sunny California.

The funniest spot I have seen in the Heartland is at Murren. The lift station which takes you up to the Schilthorn or down to Lauterbrunen valley has an old gondala car sitting next to the waiting line entrance to the lift(s) that has internet acces…

Hi Jo: First, to answer your specific questions: Reliable? We have made twelve visits to Switzerland, the Castle in Germany, and Austia. That should answer reliable. Rental not up to par/available? Beyond par, always available, sometimes, in the cas…

Then you're good, as long as you can shovel the snow from the steps going down to the road--unless you bake cookies for Big Sepp, and he takes care of that!

We have visited Sachseln 12 times. One of the reasons for selecting Sachseln for our first visit, was the efficient connections via Luzern (30 minutes from Sachseln) to other Swiss regions. There are two local trains an hour now, in the direction of…

Well done Bill. The videographer was steady as a rock--assume it was El! I want to know why we didn't see your usual "sweet""stops? Seriously, a good reminder that taking the bus provides a more visual experience, and is somewhat less hectic. This…

Switzerland
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
We treasure our visits to Chalet Berit in Sachseln. There are insufficient adjectives to describe the hospitality extended by the Greutert family.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
Always check out textile arts, quilting, embroidery wherever I go. Finally visited the quilt shop in Bern--in a cellar!
Which Untours have you already done?
Swiss Heartland, Castle, Austria.
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Don't procrastinate. Don't worry about the exchange rates. Don't overplan. Leave your electronic devices at home and feel the stress and worries melt away!

Help from Cafe Experts

I am a Windows user. My "My Page" settings are not those shown in the Help section of the Cafe. This week I prepared a blog in Word, complete with photos and wrapped text. I discovered I could not copy and paste the blog into My Page blog window. I had to re-type the blog and only add one photo, as other added photos appeared at the top of the page, each in the left margin, leaving the text far below. Also, the editing tools in my "My Page" are limited.

Also, I am unable to add ba… Continue

Bern: The Rosegarten

Breezes chasing fleecy clouds, scattered showers between bright sunshine--what about a trip to Bern to visit the Rosegarten? If it rains, we could always explore the myriad of shops along the arcade, and duck into the webs of passageways. The Rosegarten is a destimation not to be missed by serious gardeners,… Continue

Untourist SBB Friend Stefan Gretener Comes West!

As a matter of background old-timers recall that friendly, helpful SBB employees staffed rail stations along the Golden Pass line from Luzern to Interlaken. Hi Joan and Bruce! Have to tell you that we all went to a Red Sox game at Fenway Friday night. I wore my Tennessee shirt that you brought me, and four different people greeted me with "Go Vols" or "Rocky Top". Some of these New England Yanks do get the big picture!

Yellow brightens one's outlook. Perhaps, it's due to the golden sun that warms our dear planet, and those upon it. Your spirits are uplifted, and you find yourself smiling more. See my smile. You brought that on with your yellow/gold trim web page.
Side Note: Three cheers for Albert and Berit. Hip, hip hooray! Hip, hip hooray! Hip, hip hooray!

Hi Joan and Bruce,

We stayed in Sachseln at the Britschgi Chalet on our first Untour. We loved Sachseln and the BRitschgi's. We will be going back to Kandersteg in Sept 2008n and will be taking friends who have never been to Europe before. Can hardly wait to show them around that gorgeous country.

Yoiu said that you go to the Oberland and hike some. Did you ever do the Lotchental or the Gasterntal? They are great places to hike.

I agree that Untours are wonderful and I really do enjoy this untours Cafe.

The garlic festival was fun - garlic ice cream very tasty. California sure has plenty of food festivals. Maybe at the asparagus one they have asparagus ice cream. I can't believe I'm not having my Swiss fix this fall. 2008 is so far off!
