Am planning a trip to Paris, visit Normandy and the WWII memorial, drive from Paris through Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland in October 2008. I would also like to visit Austria, Norway, Sweden, Denmark but that may have to be another trip.
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
So far I have stayed with family/friends while traveling to England, Ireland, Spain and Italy.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
I've been very interested in the architecture and history of the countries and have explored cities as well as the countryside. Enjoyed Edinburgh Castle, the Hay Market, standing stones, burial mounds, Stirling Castle in Scotland; Lago Maggiore, Italy and the castle on a manmade island in the middle of the Lake; the moorish influence architecture of Barcelona, Spain and the mosaic walls, fountains and other Gaudi architecture; Tower of London, St. Martins in the Fields (where we did some rubbings in the vaults), Trafalgar Square, Kew Gardens and shopping/tea at Harrod's. More to be added later.
When you upload photos to Untours Cafe, you are also giving Untours permission to use the photos in their promotional material (with credit to you)
Will have to wait and see - haven't gone on one yet.
Which Untours have you already done?
None.
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Keep checking the blogs and the Untourist sections. People who have gone on the tours are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Don't hesitate to ask questions.
What is your favorite Untour? (so far)
Have yet to take an Untour but plan on doing Fall of 2008
Well, it's great to have you here with us at the Untours Cafe, Aija!
I haven't been to Edinburgh, but I hope to one day! Would love to hear about your experiences traveling in Europe if you feel up to posting something your 'blog' about it!
Aija:
My wife and I were in Glasgow (3 days) and Edinburgh (about 4 days) in 1997. We did some genealogy and some sightseeing. This was part of a three week trip in Scotland and England. We loved it
Just returned from a great trip to Paris. Stayed in an apartment on Rue Montorgueil. Greatest location! At least you have a lot of time to plan your trip.
Hi Aija Hughes:
Since your favorite spot in Europe is Edinburgh, adn since you hope to take an Untour in2008, let me help you find a place that could be a little like Edinburgh Mostly different but some similarities.
Warm Greetings, Hal Taussig
Hi Aija:
I may have spoken too soon about wanting to advise you about a location. Are you interested in our support services? Take a look at our web-site to study these services. You must arrive at a certain airport at certain time to get these services (Of course we help with those flight arrangements.) It sounds a bit like you don't want to get locked into a schedule, which may mean that we aren't the right program for you. Our normal programs are 2 weeks, but we now have some programs for one week (never less than that). If I were trying to help someone who likes Edinburgh to find domething similar in one of our European locations, I might sugggest that they locate near the beautiful small city of Thn. As for an apartment the web-site wil show you pictures of The Bolli apartment in the lake-side village of Huniback. It is only an 8 minute bus ride (busses evry 15 minutes) from Thun. Almost all of Switzerland is reachable in day trips from Hunibach. A rail/bus/ship pass is included in our package price. When you get our Untours web-site, click on the Swiss map and then find the the section of Switzerland called "The Oberland" which will give you an idea of day trips from the Thun area. You can even see pictures of the Bolli apartment. I must say I feel a little inept in the way I'm giving you advice, If we get serious about making decisions, I'll probably pass you off to someone more skilled in using the computer.
Warm Greetings,
Hal
Hal - I still haven't had time to read all the directions for this site so I am probably not doing the best job communicating. Yes, I do like to make most of my own arrangements, however, I believe I would really enjoy one of your Untours - especially in Switzerland so I appreciate the information that you provided. My plans for October 2008 are still in flux and if there is enough time, I would thoroughly enjoy spending a week or so on one of your Untours in Switzerland. I think Untours is a wonderful idea and have enjoyed reading the comments. So, long story short, please don't discount me from taking one or more of your untours.
Thanks, Aija, for the "words of appreciation" about my paintings. It's really nice to hear from new Untours pals (I've requested adding you to my list of friends . . . Cheers, Bob
In a really long day trip; most of your time would beon the train. Anearly train out and a late one back. Sorry I don't have the skills to make a schedule. Consider adding several days on the end of your Paris Untour; and visitng Britanny on your way out and again on your way back.
So.why not sign up now for October 2008. The Bolli is often booked very early. I didn't mention that the land lady and her husband are good friends of mine. Part of the Plus will be to make their acquaintance.
Hal.
