Hi Kathy: Looking forward to meeting you. How old is your daughter? Which apartment are you in? We're in the first floor Rembrandt. Are you there for one week or two? The girls and I are getting very excited -- now it's only 3 months until we leave!…

Hi: I just happened to read this again and realized that we will be there at the same time that you are. I, a close female friend and my daughter. I have gotten lots of information on wonderful things to do, but really just wanted to meet my "neighb…

I have the Madurodam on my list. You're right, there's WAY too much to see and do for one week. And surprise....I just spoke with Isabelle, the 14 yr old. She said, "I'll try anything once -- even eels and herring!"

Hi Pat: Zandfoort is I think if I remember correctly, a district of Haarlem, out on the coast to the west of Adam. If they want to see folks dressed in folk costumes, I would think that the Alkamaar, and or Edam would be good for the cheese market…

I'm with them on eels and herring - but I have tried both. Have a funny story about eels. One of the eleven year olds given my challenge could notdecide between eel and asparagus to be his "not-asked-to-try" item. I wasn't going to confirm his deci…

Hello again, Thanks for the chocolate shop recommedations - I know the girls will definitely enjoy that! As for picky eaters, I'm afraid I might have a problem. I think they'll be willing to try most of the stuff, but may stop short of eels and he…

Hi John, Thanks for all your suggestions. The Red Light District and the brown cafe's are definitely not on our agenda! And we'll be visiting a WWII museum and the Henri Chapelle cemetery in Belgium the following week with my cousins. I was really…

Hi Pat: This is not going to be a what to do email, rather a what not to do and a where not to go. I lived in Amsterdam in 1990 - 1991, on a post commencement co op. I came in contact with all the things American College studnets like about Adam, a…

A chocolate shop in Amsterdam: Pompadour in the "Nine Streets" - very special place for an afternoon break. Near Anne Frank house. Pucini chocolate also very good for a modern approach. Puccini has two locations , one serves light meals in addition…

Lukehead -- Great idea to bring a soccer sweatshirt! She would LOVE to play with the local kids. And hopefully there will be a few older kids around for the 14 year old to talk to. I'm hoping her cell phone won't work over there -- if it does, her…

Hi Katherine, Yes, they're reading Anne Frank's diary. And thanks for the Dordrecht recommendation. I haven't read anything about that site specifically, but it sounds like a good idea. We're spending only a day in Brussels and then going on to the…

Profile Information

What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
UK, on the way home from France
Where would you most like to go next?
Greece.....(but I am going back to Paris this summer...got kinda hooked on Paris)
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
I will always love the Greutert's place in Sachslen (the Swiss Heartland) (Chalet Berit, Studio Albert and Elizabeth) because they hosted the Untours office and I lived there for many years, but if you take the love of that family out of the picture...

Usually staff don't stay in our best places..we save them for the customers...but Le Chiuse or any of Anna Ginotti's in Tuscany might be my favorite of those I have seen.

I know The RIGHT Vacation Rental apartments much better, since I manage that part. My favorites: the Breton Chateau in Brittany, the Katalagari Suites in Crete, the House of the Painter in Dordogne, Apartment Amalia in Ljubljana, and the Penthouses in Barcelona.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
I paint watercolor and I love to understand other cultures -- their differences and similarities. I love to walk and bike
What is the funniest thing that happened to you on an Untour?
hmmm...will have to think about that one --- I almost got struck by lightning in an Alpine field once, but that wasn't so funny.
Which Untours have you already done?
All but Venice, Umbria, Greece
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Go. Don't worry. Don't overplan. But enjoy anticipating.
What is your favorite Untour? (so far)
Tough choice: a tie between Ticino, Holland and Provence....also LOVED Spain. I am intrigued by the fact that almost every staff person who has gone to the Greek Untour says it is their favorite..it's one of the fiew I haven't doen yet.

Paris bus protocol

The last time we were in Paris, Eleanor and I used the Metro because it was so convenient. However, it is not handicapped friendly. There are many stairs, and sometimes long distances to walk when connecting to another line can be a problem. I know that almost all the buses in Paris are now handicapped accessible. So for our upcoming Paris Untour we are hoping to try the Paris bus system while using a wheelchair. The subject of Paris buses came up in another travel website. So I posted a request… Continue

Wherever you go, there you are...

Yes, we want to get away from it all, have a change of scene, break up the old routine...
So, we're leaving our rural village (pop. 500), largely un-served by public transportation, where the main livelihoods are farming, artisan foods and tourism.

Happy Birthday, Dear Cyrano...

I just happened to notice that today is the birthday of Rostand's character, apparently based on an historical person, who came from Bergerac. As Bergerac in the Dordogne...where we're going...soon. Coincidence?-- or --cue theme from the X-files!

Okay, seriously, we have been studying like crazy and find that the areas of interest chronographically are;
Pre-history- the geology, the caves, the troglodyte dwellings
Romans-ruins, bridges, roads, hoping for a relatively close aqued… Continue

Flickr is good site for most of Idylchat people. The problem will be with someone like me who does this professionally, has his own site and has copyright concerns. For me, I am more comfortable with putting some pictures on the Untours site and allowing you to link back to my site as you wish. I am not sure I would upload to Flickr. But that is just me.

I am leaving tomorrow for Santa Fe, so I may not get to uploading any pictures, as they are all on my imaging machine at home. I will try to upload some travel stuff as I take images next week. The other tasks you want us to do, I can handle remotely from Santa Fe.

So far I am storing on my computer, but plan to try using a website whenever my next trip is, so it will be easier for family/friends to see my photos while I am gone. I took my iBook last fall and downloaded the photos nearly every night to iPhoto, sorting, naming etc, and found that was a good way to keep current and remember names of places. But sharing them was difficult through my remote server and Locarno was short on hot spots.

I still can't figure out how to accept invittions to be my friend. When I move down to click on the designated place, I have only a cursor, not an arrow, and nothing happens. Be aware that I am a computer illiterate.

Thanks Marilee. France is my second favorite. I haven't been able to fully participate in the Untours Cafe yet because we just got back from a road trip from California to New Mexico, and then I had lasik surgery yesterday. Doing well but I'm not supposed to be on the computer yet. I will have LOTS of photos to upload shortly.
