Yes, lighting really is everything! Do you do any photo editing once you have taken the picture (adjust for lightness/darkness, color balance, etc.?)

Profile Information

What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
Paris will always and forever be my favorite city in the world!
Where would you most like to go next?
I am itching to try out our Prague and Budapest Untours and I have always wanted to go to Iceland.
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
Nafplio in Greece! What a gem! No tourists, gorgeous water, an amazing seaside path that winds around cliffs, tons of adorable cafés and restaurants, and everything is within a 5-minute walk. It really is pretty close to paradise!!!
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
I love to discover local foods and markets when I am overseas. I am a huge bakery fan. I also love to hike and two of my most fantastic hiking experiences were in Switzerland from the Brienzer Rothorn to Schönbühl and in the Cinque Terre when my husband and I did all 5 villages on foot!
What is the funniest thing that happened to you on an Untour?
Not sure if it is funny, but a friend and I almost got stuck on top of First in Switzerland because we were going to miss the last cable car down the mountain. Luckily the cable car operator was still there and was about to leave for the night so we were able to ride down with him! All we had was a bottle of water and an apple and we saw no one on the path, so I think we might have been stuck there! Funny now, not so funny then...
Which Untours have you already done?
Alsace, Provence, Paris, Spain, Castle, Swiss Heartland, Swiss Oberland, Swiss Ticino, Vienna, Greece, Tuscany North, Tuscany South, and Holland
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Try out different ones! I am a Francophile at heart so I often gravitate towards France, but I have truly loved my stays in Italy, Spain, Greece, etc. and have learned so much about these different cultures! Each one has such beauty!
What is your favorite Untour? (so far)
So hard to say because I have loved all of the ones I have been on! But I would have to say that Alsace, Holland, Greece and Tuscany South are at the top of my list!

Dutch Treats, Part 2: Potato, Patat-o

One of the things I have always enjoyed the most about Holland is their fries (or patat, in Dutch). My husband, who doesn't get too excited about anything culinary, still raves about the fries we experienced during our 2005 trip to Holland. There is something so instantly gratifyin… Continue

Dutch Treats, Part 1: The friendliness factor

I'm no expert on intercultural/interpersonal relations, but I know genuine friendliess when I see it. And the Dutch people are friendliness personified. I just returned from a week in Holland where I traveled with a friend of mine and was fortunate enough to not only see tulips ablaze in the fields but encounter some of the friendliest 'strangers' ever.… Continue

Arthur Frommer just blogged about us!

I was doing some web analytics research yesterday and saw a bunch of people came to us on October 1 from frommers.com. Curiosity got the best of me and I drilled down to see exactly where they were coming from. It turns out Arthur Frommer himself had blogged about us! Here is the link to his blog post:

Two long-time Untourists...together at last!

I think this is so cool and had to share...Francy on the Swiss team emailed me this photo of Joan Herriges and Shirley Thornton, together for the first time in Switzerland this past summer, after hearing about each other for years. Shirley has taken more Untours than anyone on record and Joan has been traveling with us for at least 14 years (our digital records don't go back any further). A friendship is formed on the Grandmother's Walk!!!

(Part 3) Eating European at Home: Total Yogurt

If you have not yet tried Total yogurt, you should definitely do so, like today! This delicious Greek yogurt is the closest thing I have found to, well, the yogurt I ate in Greece (and other yogurts I have enjoyed in France, Germany, etc). It is incredibly thick, rich, creamy and natural...you can eat it plain or doctor it up.

Things I have added to Total yogurt to increase its yum factor:
Honey
Sugar
Jam
Granola
Bananas
Strawberries

Total yogurt comes… Continue

Hi Kim,
Just returned last night from Paris Untour. Absolutely awesome! Had crepes at the place you recommended. You were right. Best in Paris.
I have beaucoup photos for you. Haven't even had time to look them over myself yet. Just getting awake.

Kim,
Downloaded my Paris photos from my traveling portable hard drive this weekend. I'm a slacker!! The count...a tad lower than 4,000. But Frank took about 100 photos besides his videos. So that should bring them up close to 4,000. :-D
Boy do I have some work to do plus a daughter's wedding in November!!

Yum! Sounds awesome! I wish you could bring those things back and have them be as delicious as when you eat them 'sur place'!

Regarding the videos, it's pretty easy to upload them to the Café. The principle is the same as a photo upload assuming it is a digital camcorder: connect the device to the computer, download the files to your computer and then browse for them through Ning. Of course, if the camcorder is not digital, things are more complex! Thanks for letting me know.

Kim,
We had a Grecque crepe. She said it was beef but we know it was ham...all the good stuff . We shared it and a greek salad that was also huge. It ended up being dinner. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm postin a couple pixs. Don't think you will see Frank's videos. Have no idea how to get them up on the computer. We're always lucky to finally get a copy made on a DVD for us. Frank still works so there is little time.

Hi Kim!
Thanks for the welcome. I had a lot of fun in Switzerland. As for hikes, I didn't do as many as people normally do. I'm not much of a hiker, but i did "hike" up to a lot of awesome places and views.

Your right that is a lot of cheese, over one hundred pounds. We actually bought some from last yeaar and ate it while we were in CH.
I was interested in your "funny story". I had a similar experience that I was considering using as my funniest thing, although it didn't seem so funny at the time.
I had hiked up to the top of the Reichenbach Falls with my family but decided my old knees might not like going back down. My 15 year old grandson assured me that the road was "right up there a little way." He took my pack and I took only my rail pass and camera and said I'd meet them at the bus station in Meiringen. About 15 or 20 minutes later I reached the Gasthaus in Zwirgi and looked at the bus schedule. I had just missed the bus and had to wait about an hour for the next one. It was a nice day but rather warm. I would have loved to get a drink - but no money. I took some nice photos and settled down on a rock to wait, worrying about the family worrying about me. When the bus finally came I flashed my rail pass and the driver said, "3 francs." After trying to explain in my limited german and his limited english he waved me on with a smile. I think my camera said. "Stupid Tourist". When we reached Meiringen I saw my husband walking down the street I chased him around a corner and told him I owe that bus driver 3 francs. We raced back and found the driver changing the sign on his bus and gave him the 3 francs. He thanked us and just grinned. By that time I felt pretty foolish but I had to laugh. Next time we split up I took a cell phone and some cash.

haha, that's some sort of snow-plowing train...or at least that's what the sign said.

Kim, thanks for the nice comments on my Alsace pictures. We absolutely loved our Untour there. I just wrote my very first blog last night and it's on Alsace -although the title wouldn't let you know it! Maybe I should change the title - can I do that once it's published?? I'd be delighted to send you a CD of the Alsace pictures. Do I send it to you at Idyll's address in PA? Would be really happy should one of the photos make it into an Untours publication.
