Profile Information

What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
Every place I've been - today it would be Italy. Next year, who knows.
Where would you most like to go next?
That's what we're working on right now - probably Switzerland and when the notice said two children under 15 could go for free we decided to take two of our grandchildren with us.
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
In Italy we stayed in Umbria with host Jo-Anne Rowe, in East Sicily with host Katherine Reidy and Rome with Merilina Noto. Those are my three favorite locations and my three favorite hosts. I'm so happy about the location selections because each location is unique. Umbria was laid back walled hillside villages, Sicily reminded me very much of the Arizona desert but with lots of green stuff and Rome was history and excitement of a large city.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
Art. History. Culture differences. Food. Meeting local people and seeing how they live. Understanding and accepting our differences.
What is the funniest thing that happened to you on an Untour?
In Sicily I finally came across a gas station attendant that spoke very good and conversant English. I complimented him . . . . he laughed and said there was a story behind why his English was so good. He met and fell in love with a Russian girl who was visiting Sicily. After she returned to Russia they continued the relationship and eventually married. She spoke no Italian and he spoke no Russian so their communication had to be in a common language - that happened to be English. To this day he said they still converse at home in English.

Second might be the tour of Rome we got riding the 116 bus.
Which Untours have you already done?
This was our first but I can guarantee you it won't be our last.
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Untour's made what would have been an unbelievably complicated and likely undoable chore for us to do on our own a simple task of packing bags and showing up at the right airport at the right time. This left time for us to plan the fun things and leave the travel details to them.

Word of advice for first timers - don't forget that the first place you touch down on your return to the US is where you MUST take your luggage and go through customs. We didn't know that and our luggage, which the Alitalia airline attendant assured us was checked through to our final destination, was delayed a few days in New York (not so bad when returning home) and if you think the airlines can beat up your luggage you have no idea what the US Customs Department can do to it.
