- What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
- I really don't have "a favorite place" in Europe. Anywhere on the other side of the Atlantic and along or in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Adriatic Seas (so far).
- Where would you most like to go next?
- More transatlantic cruises; Russia, China; another visit to Antarctica (truly spectacular and surrreal); always back to Switzerland for the scenery and ease of getting around; Italy for obvious reasons.
- Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
- We've been on two Untours; Ticino (Locarno). We stayed at Residenza Motta, no view of the lake, but very centrally located within walking distance of the train and bus stops, stores and restaurants. In August, 2008, we stayed with the Baron and Lilo (and the dog!) at Schloss Sommersdorf (Bavaria Untour). The Baron and Lilo were wonderful hosts. We had a great time visiting many of the small towns on the "Romantic Road".
- Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
- Hiking and pass driving in Switzerland, eating in Italy and NOT always experiencing my vacation through a camera lens or screen, or typing on a laptop! Good grief, blogs, slideshows and videos are fine, but take some time to just take it all in and enjoy!
- When you upload photos to Untours Cafe, you are also giving Untours permission to use the photos in their promotional material (with credit to you)
- Meeting our "much older" Untourists and thinking, "Boy, are we with the wrong crowd!" only to be outdistanced by them!! Not especially funny but certainly humbling and eye-opening!
- Which Untours have you already done?
- Ticino (Locarno); Sommersdorf Castle (Bavaria)
- What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
- Don't act like the stereotypical American. Try to blend in. If you think you will feel uncomfortable, you probably will. Europe, Europeans, their way of life and attitudes ARE different. Remember YOU are the visitor. THEY have been around a lot longer than you. Go with an open mind and a healthy curiosity about people and things outside the "U.S. of A." Also, the "warmth" and "friendliness" of innkeepers, landlords, tour guides, restaurant workers, etc. does not necessarily reflect the true personality of the natives. Keep things in perspective and you'll probably have a better time and not be disappointed. These are some personal thoughts after listening to the experiences, good and bad, of friends who have traveled outside the U.S. recently, some for the first time. And, finally, consider leaving the younger children at home.

- Ticino--so far, but more planned.

Welcome to the Cafe. I think the the Ticino area of Switzerland is my favorite of all the locations...rivalled only by Provence. I would love to see any pictures you have (although I very much applaud your advice not to experience your vacation only through a view finder.) as it would bring fond memories. Did you do your hiking in the valleys? I think one of the happiest times of my life was a hike I took by myself in the Versasca valley?
