Untours Cafe

My husband and I are considering a Swiss Untour in September of 2009. I have read many discussions and triplogs but am overwhelmed with information. We like to do just about everything--sightseeing, walking, hiking, visiting museums, attending concerts, lingering at outdoor cafes, and enjoying nature. We cannot decide between Heartland and Oberland. Does anyone have suggestions to help us out?

I think whichever you end up choosing, you'll say, "wow, I'm so glad we chose the ----land!" But since you like museums and concerts, I think the Oberland might work out better for you. The closest cities (Thun and Bern) are cosmopolitan with a huge variety of cafes and cultural activities, and the transportation in the Oberland runs later than in the Heartland, so you can stay out later. But you're still smack in the middle of the Swiss Oberland Alps, so you can walk, hike and enjoy nature to your hearts' content. The Heartland, while it also has access to all this, is a little more rural, and people turn in earlier! But again, I'm sure you'll be happy with either.

Vicki,
I am responding to your post because I had those same feelings last year at this time as my family was considering our trip to Switzerland. It is easy to be overwhelmed but rest assured that Untours will help you make sense out of all of it with the hiking and biking guide as well as the book regarding the towns and villages in the area you choose. While we were in Switzerland we stayed in the heartland. Since we love to hike this was a perfect location. We stayed in Reuti and hiked extensively in that area and also took the train to the Jungfrau region to hike. These were very easy trips with the excellent bus and train transportation available in Switzerland. We hiked eight days of our fourteen day visit. The other days we spent in the wonderful cities and villages enjoying the culture. We visited many museums and experienced Swiss music at its finest. From the heartland it is an easy trip to Bern, Thun, Brienz, Lungern, and Lucern. We enjoyed the cultural opportunities in Lucern and spent most of three days there. I would imagine staying in the Oberland would afford similar opportunities and agree with Kate that which ever you choose will be wonderful! Untours is incredibly well run. They give you all the help you want or need and leave you alone to discover your favorite parts of Switzerland.
