Restaurant Ideas- Interlaken, or between Interlaken and Meiringen

I would like restaurant ideas for a family birthday dinner in Interlaken or somewhere in between Interlaken and Meirengen(where we are staying).  We will be there in late June.  We will spend the day sight seeing in Interlaken then out to dinner.  There are 17 of us in our family with age ranging from 5 years old to 75.  Thank you.

"Bebbis" in Interlaken. Check out their website: www.bebbis.com. If you spend the day exploring in and around Interlaken with a 5 and 75 year old, you probably won't be inclined to get on, off and on the train in order to eat dinner somewhere else before ending the day in Meiringen. This is a fun place (good for kids) and serves authentic Swiss food. I'm sure the restaurant could accommodate your large group and you don't have to worry about making too much noise. I don't know about restaurants in Meiringen, but I'm sure someone will respond with information.

I took a tour group to Harder Kulm, which is a restaurant above Interlaken. It is a very special place to Interlaken. You take a cable car to the restaurant and have magnificent views of the area, especially the Jungfrau. They can easily accommodate your party and the food was very good. The people who were with me were 50 years old and up to 75. There is also an animal park at the base of the cable car.
If you have trouble contacting them, or getting more information, let me know and I would be glad to help. I no longer am a tour director, I now work as a flight attendant. But I have traveled quite a lot in Switzerland.
I love Switzerland and truly enjoy helping others who are traveling there.

What a wonderful suggestion it seems. We will write down the name of Harder Kulm because we for sure want to visit Interlaken and the cable car sounds fun. This is our first Untour and first to Switzerland. We are hoping we can manage the rail schedules and learn before we go about which/where/when. Do you suggest we get a rail map and start there? Our first week will be in Heartland and second in Ticino. We would appreciate any comments you care to make. Judy and Vicki

Yes, I would suggest getting a rail map. There is also a book, Switzerland By Rail, by Anthony Lambert which thoroughly explains the rail system. However, it does not include the timetable. If you are using Swiss Untours, I would contact them and ask them about securing a timetable for you, ahead of time. With the map and timetable, you will be able to plan a little before you go. But of course, part of the fun, is discovering new things once you arrive. The Swiss are very proud of their country, and rightfully so. When they see that you appreciate their country as well, they will be most helpful. They want you to enjoy your time there. If you haven't already planned it, may I suggest a boatride on Lake Thun, from Interlaken to Thun, or vice-versa. I still do this each time I am there. I would also go into the Lauterbrunnen Valley and up to the Schilthorn, via Murren. Also, spend a little time in Murren. This can be done by rail and also by cablecar. This is my very favorite!!
Enjoy,
Sue

Thank you very much for your ideas! We'll be sure to make notes and I'll ask Untours for the timetable ahead of time. Can't wait for the boatride! Again, thanks--Judy & Vicki

Great idea Sue. After twelve visits to the Heartland, we finally took the trip to Harder Kulm. Thank goodness we did. The view is spectacular--looking across at Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. It is really special taking the post bus from Meiringen, winding your way up to Harder Kulm. The houses and gardens are beautiful, and each turn the view gets better and better, though time will be consumed. And as always it is fun to watch the local residents getting on and off, chatting with the driver. You can also reach the cable car via modern elevator from a ferry landing. We had a very good meal at the restaurant.

The trip up to HK came about as we won two 20CHF gift certificates for the restaurant in 2008. We were shopping at Migros in Interlaken, after returning from Grindewald, before we headed home. They were promoting Harder Kulm and insisted we take a chance. They were amazed that we won two generous prizes back to back. This meant we had to return to Sachseln in 2009 to take advantage! Trust me, it doesn't take much to get us back.

Kay: Is this your first trip to the Heartland? And, are you staying in Meiringen? Don't want to offend anyone who is a resident of Interlaken, but can't imagine spending much time sightseeing there, except to change trains, and the required walk from Ost to West to see the old (grand) hotels and the view of Jungfrau. Harder Kulm is a good suggestion, away from the crowds. But a whole day there, with small children, and a dinner following is a real stretch.

Perhaps someone could suggest a good restaurant location in Brienz, which is half-way between. This town, home of the wood carvers, is a destination worth exploring, and could include a boat trip. There are many fine traditional restaurants in Meiringen, and how about the Hasliberg? Perhaps I am unfair to Interlaken. I know I have an aversion to crowded towns with with wall to wall tourist souvenir stores. But it has the one of the best Migros markets in CH! We shop there often when returning from the a day in the mountains.

Joan and Bruce, I have been there once but it was 18 years ago. Our whole group is staying in Meiringen. I will look into Brienz and the Hasliberg. Thanks for your help. K

I would tend to agree with Joan and Bruce. While Interlaken offers opportunity for accommodating your large group, beyond the tourist shops there is not much else to do. I have been in a couple of restaurants in Brienz and I believe they could handle your large group. There would be opportunity to not only take a boat ride but also a swim! My kids were 9 and 11 when we visited Brienz and they loved swimming in the lake. There is a beach, diving boards, platforms, and a floating trampoline a short walk from the train station. There was a small fee to use the beach. The water was clear and cold and we all really enjoyed our time there. I would also consider the pizza places in Meirengen.......Whatever and wherever you choose will probably be ok because you will be with your family in one of the greatest countries on this planet!!!! Happy Travels....

One of our favorite restaurants is the Steinbock in Brienz. For us the food has always been great, they should have plenty of room for your party, and the atmosphere is really nice. Marge really likes the tablecloths and napkins decorated subtly with edelweiss patterns. Where ever you go, have a great time and as you know it is almost impossible to have a bad meal in Switzerland.
