Untours Cafe

We've sent a simple survey to everyone on the Cafe, so that we can make a map with little Untourist markers all over the world.

But if you would like to tell us more than the destination, feel free to add the details of your trip, or your hopes for your trip, wherever you are going (Untour or not) here.

We will be leaving shortly for a short vacation in the Kennebunkport, Maine area. The last time we were there was in 2000, celebrating our 30th anniversary. The day of our anniversary, we took a 2 hour cruise on a schooner that just so happened to be called "Eleanor". We sipped wine on deck. Afterwards a drive south took us to the Chauncey Creek Lobster Pound, where we each enjoyed a 3 pound lobster for lunch.

We are traveling to Ireland in early September for two weeks-doing a self drive, B and B type trip. We will spend a few days after arrival in Dublin to sightsee, recover from jet lag and get our bearings, then head towards the Kilkenny, Cork areas, Dingle Peninsula, Galway and back to Dublin. We're using Rick Steves and Trip Advisor to guide us-we love Rick Steves' advice about avoiding towns where "everyone is wearing a name-tag" (sounds like a potential Untourist to me!)-no Blarney Stone or Bunratty Castle visits planned !!
We've left a few nights unbooked, and will decide where as we go.
Eric experienced driving on the left when we went to England in 1996 and did a similiar type trip-here's hoping he still has the skills. Sue will be the navigator only!!

We were in Scotland/England in 1997 for three weeks. Driving was extremely nerve wracking the first two days until I got "used" to it. I swear I must have left permanent hand prints on the steering wheel. I drove from Glasgow to Edinburgh. My plan was to skirt around the city, and arrive at our B&B from the south. However, a wrong turn resulted in a drive through the center of the city. I almost side-swiped a bus because I had this tendency to drift to the left when driving. After a few days in Edinburgh, we purposely left town on a Sunday morning when the roads were quiet.
Later when we were staying in Oxford, we drove to Windsor Castle for the day. We were lucky enough to get a handicap spot across the street from the castle. Later as we were getting ready to leave, we discovered that the rear view mirror had been sideswiped by a lorry. Here I had managed to drive for several weeks without an accident, and the car gets hit while parked! A police report had to be then filed at the local police station. The delay resulted in a drive back to Oxford in the dark. I had to pull over to manually adjust the headlights because I couldn't see the road.

We understand, completely, Bill. Our main problem in England seemed to be at intersections, and parking lots, where you really have to think where to drive. And of course, those dreaded "roundabouts"-sometimes we just kept going round and round, until the navigator figured out the right road to take. Though it did take us hours just to get out of airport at Heathrow. We kept ending up at the bus lot-we finally found a friendly bus driver who led us out!! Wow, we had never heard of Untours then, but what an Untours moment!!
On this same England trip we met an American mother-daugher couple a hundred miles or so north of London at a laundromat who were so distraught with the driving they had called someone to come and get their rental car, and they were planning to take the train for the rest of their trip. We have often wondered what happend to them
This is one reason we are allowing ourselves three days in Dublin before returning to the airport to pick up our rental car. I can't imagine these folks who fly in then just pick up a car and start driving in a jet lagged fog. We arranged our flights so we would be driving out of Dublin on a Sunday!!

Marilee,
We are doing an Untours Sampler in the fall, but we have just returned from a 16 day trip in our little travel trailer (an Aliner) covering Florida, North & South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois (just drove through Indiana), Missouri, Tennessee and back to Florida. Most of the trip was to visit family, but we also visited historical sites including Lake of the Ozarks, the civil war battle sites of Carruthersville, MO; Shiloh, TN and Corinth, MS. We made several stops at wineries and are so looking forward to doing so in France and Italy (or at least sipping wines). We enjoyed reading the others posts.
