We are going on an Untour in May to Sachseln and are staying at the Britschgi. What is the weather like in May? How is the train service out of Sachseln?
We have visited Sachseln 12 times. One of the reasons for selecting Sachseln for our first visit, was the efficient connections via Luzern (30 minutes from Sachseln) to other Swiss regions. There are two local trains an hour now, in the direction of Luzern. To go in the direction of Interlaken, you will take the local train, two stops, to Giswil to pick up the Inter-Regio, or I-R Golden Pass (a little fancier). They run every hour. You will love the Britschgi's.
Weather in May. Another veteran Untourist and I just exchanged e-mails on this subject. We both agreed that the weather for each of our trips was different. All of our trips, except one, were mid-May to mid-June. If you love Spring, that is what you will get. Mother Nature always has surprises for us. One year we had lots of snow in the higher regions, limiting our walks. Another year we had hot weather throughout, even warm in the higher regions. Last year (2009) we had not one day of rain, warm weather when we arrived, and pleasant weather thereafter. The next visitors, mid-June, mid-July had considerable rain.
We bring good rain jackets and waterproof shoes. And from there we layer. I have a "do not bring" list. Polartec is on top of the list--too warm and bulky for walking. Heavy sweatshirts are also on the list. I favor long sleeve no-iron cotton shirts, lightweight sweatshirts, and cotton sweaters. The rain jacket does double-duty as a regular jacket and folds up into a small bundle to stow in my rucksack. I favor rucksacks in lieu of backpacks, which get overloaded. Think everyone has their own style of preparing to walk or hike.
On occasion, If it is gloomy, we will hop on an early train and connect to the Cisalpino (sp?) to Lugano. This is a beautiful trip through the Gotthard Pass--something to behold. By 10:30 we are sipping our cappucino's in a Ticino atmosphere, and strolling along Lake Maggiore, and indulging in a pasta lunch.
Anymore questions, ask away. Happy planning Gene Ann. Joan.
Thanks for the information. I will probably think of more questions before we leave but this is very helpful. The weather sounds like our typical springs in the Rockies. Thanks again.
Joan and Bruce summed it up very well. The tulips stay in bloom for a month, as do the lilacs. May is often more like early summer than June. The cows are not out to graze as yet, so the wild flowers color the fields like a carpet. The CisAlpino no longer runs in Switzerland. It was a piece of junk (Swiss description, but I agree).
